Our School Canteen

Our school/college canteen is per-haps the busiest place in the school/college. It is the place where almost every student is expected to pay at least one or two visits a day, and that not just to have a taste of some delicacies, but also to brush himself or her-self up with the latest information, real or based on some rumour. Thus there is a free and frank discussion of fashion of various boys and girls and teaching habits of different teachers. Sometimes, discussion can centre around some political or economic matter also. Particularly, the senior students may discuss some new world development or new government policy on some matter.

This does not mean, however, that our college/school canteen is only a place of discussion. The primary aim of the canteen is to cater food to the teachers as well as the students. To fulfil this aim, our school/ college canteen is well-equipped. There are separate cabins for teachers, boys and girls. The teachers sit separately in their cabins, but the boys and girls often mix up and sit together in their cabins. The canteen con-tractor who sits in a corner of the canteen is a conscientious, jolly middle-aged man. He not only keeps the furniture neat and clean but also supplies clean and fresh food in attractive crockery. Still, he does not charge rates higher than the market rates. He has a team of trained servants to assist him in his work. Both the students and the teachers are satisfied with his arrangements. They make it a point to place bulk orders on him whenever there is a function held by any society or club connected with academic, sports or extra-curricular activities.

It does happen, though rarely, when there is a complaint against the canteen contractor. Some dish is found stale or a fly is discovered in a dish or tea leaves used by the contractor are sub-standard There may be abnormal delay in attending to or a student. A servant maya teacher carelessly spill tea or some liquid over somebody s clothes. Rarely, rates charged may seem to be exorbitant. But, the canteen contractor, though not highly educated, is a Wise man. He admits his fault, if there is any, Promptly and offers remedies immediately. Otherwise, he tries his best to convince the complainants of his correctness.

Thus, our school/college canteen is an enjoyable place. One misses its hubbub and charm during holidays.
