A Railway Smash
It was Sunday; I was enjoying my usual morning walk. I saw a man sitting by the railway line. I thought that he was easing himself. But he turned pale on seeing me. Suddenly he got up and took to his heels. I ran to the place and found that he had unbolted a fish-plate. A train was coming from the Amritsar side. I was in a fix and didn't know what to do. I ran towards the approaching train. I gave a signal with my hands to stop the train. The driver understood that there was some danger ahead. He slowed down but he could not stop the train well in time. When the train approached, I ran all the line. In no time, there was a terrible smash. I loud explosion rent my ears. The engine and three bogies plowed into the fields. Some passengers were thrown out. The bogies were reduced to splinters. Many passengers were buried under the debris. I stood dazed and dumb-founded. There were loud cries on all sides. People ran out of their houses. They reached the place of accident. They nursed the trapped passengers. They gave them water to drink. They served the wounded passengers as best as they could. A large number of passengers were killed there and then. Some of the passengers were lying unconscious. It was a heart-rending sight. I informed the police. After sometimes a police party and a relief van reached the spot. First-aid was given to the injured. Serious cases were removed to the hospital. Dead bodies were sent for postmortem. I told the police how it had all happened. A vigorous search was made for the man in the surrounding fields. A villager found him hidden in a sugarcane field. He handed him over to the police. The man was interrogated. He turned out to be an enemy-agent.
