26 January-Republic Day

"Republic Day a day which revives a spirit of sacrifice and dedication towards the country and countrymen" 

Republic Day is the most important day in the life of Indian people. It was on this day, the 26th January 1950 that the Government of India adopted the new constitution, and India was declared a Republic. Dr. Rajendra Prasad became the first President and Pt. Jawahar Lal Nehru the Great Prime Minister with the adoption of the constitution the common people of India became the masters of their own fate. Thus this day is very important for us all in India.

Preparations are made several days in advance. Participants assemble in Delhi to make preparations. They prepare tableaus and many other attractive models that depict the progress of the state. The schools and colleges also participate in this function. Delhi Police, Delhi Fire Brigade, Red Cross, and ex-army men also take part in this function. A stage is made near Vijay Chowk and the lawns are divided into different parts.

The invited guests have separate enclosures to sit. First of all, arrive ministers and other MP's. Then arrives the Prime Minister who goes to the war memorial to pay homage to the departed soldiers in the wars. Then he reaches the place where the President is to arrive. The President comes in his car with the chief guests and received thereby the Prime Minister and he introduces the President to various dignitaries.

Thereafter begins the Parade. First of all, the three wings of the army come with their commanders and with their bands. As soon as they come to the dais of the President, the commander gives the command to the wing and all of the solute the President. Thus all the participants pass by the President, saluting him with full honor. In between come the pageants and the children of the school with their item of dance or dramas which they can enact on the open road before the President. Then come the tableaus which are very attractive and charming. The spectators enjoy these spectacles. The president gives the award to a war widow posthumously for the gallantry her husband had shown in Kashmir Valley before these items start. Finally, this parade comes to an end. Then the National Anthem is sung and the President is given a send-off.

Entire Delhi is decorated with different kinds of items. All the markets, shops, and bazaars are decorated in a way that they become wonderful charming. The people who had come from outside Delhi were going from place to place enjoying the beauty of the city.

Functions are organized in the schools and colleges and the students perform different kinds of items. All the states celebrate this great day with pomp and show.

At night the President House, North Block, South Block, and other Government offices are illuminated. It is a fine spectacle and thousands of people reach the President's House and at the lawns of India Gate enjoy the beauty of lights.
