Role of A Chief Minister

The Chief Minister holds the central place in the administration of the State and the place is alike to the place of the Prime Minister at the Centre. He or she is the leader of the State Government. It is upon the Chief Minister's advice that ministers are selected and different portfolios are offered to them.

If a Chief Minister does not get satisfied with a Minister's performance, he can be asked to resign or sacked from the Council of ministers. The Chief Minister can ask the Governor to sack a Minister in extreme conditions.

As a presiding officer of the Council of Ministers, he very much influences the discussions and decisions. He makes sure that the Council is working as a group. lt is the task of the Chief Minister to correspond to the Governor the decisions of the Council of Ministers and make accessible to the Governor such information about the administration of the State or legislative proposals. In the Legislature too, the Chief Minister has an important role to play

The Chief Minister decides when the sessions are to be summoned or prorogued. He makes important policy announcements in the Legislature and protects the policies of the government in the House. He is the leader of the state legislature and the most prominent personality of the state. He acts as the spokesperson of the government.

In spite of the essential roles played by the Chief Minister, his most important role depends on his relationship with his party members and that of the center.
