Biography of Jawaharlal New

(November 14, 1889 - May 27, 1964)

Jawaharlal Nehru was the first Prime Minister of India. He was born on November 14, 1889. He was schooled at Harrow School, London. Subsequently, he was admitted to Trinity College of Cambridge University.

After coming back to India, Nehru joined the freedom struggle. He met Gandhiji in 1916 at the Lucknow session of the Congress and was impressed by him. They remained loyal to each other inspite of their differences. Nehru remained a dominant figure throughout the Indian freedom struggle.

On August 15, 1947, India attained Independence and Nehru became the Prime Minister of India. He adopted the policy of a mixed economy. He defined India's foreign policy as anti-imperialist, anti-apartheid, and anti-colonial. Along with Tito of Yugoslavia and Nasser of Egypt, he founded the Non-Aligned Movement. He also formulated the famous Panchasheel policy. He died in 1964.
