Biography of N.T. Rama Rao

(May 28, 1923)

N.T. Rama Rao was a great and popular Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh. After making it big in Telugu films, he entered Andhra politics and became a top leader.

He was born on May 28, 1923, in an ordinary peasant family in a remote village in the Krishna district. He passed the matriculation examination in 1940. While in college, he took part in some dramas. Later, he took the job of sub-registrar. But he wanted to make his career in films. L.V. Prasad's Mana Desam' was N.T.R.'s first film. After his role in Sri Venkateswara Mahatyam, he became very popular. He acted in 292 films in a career spanning 33 years between 1949 and 1982.

He was deeply moved by the plight of the poor and gave a patient caring to their problems when they called on him at his residence. Later quit films and founded the Telugu Desam Party in 1982. In 1983, his party came to power and he became the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh. He kept many of his election promises and became a leader of the masses.
