Biography of Arun Jaitley

(December 28, 1952)

The Minister of Law, Justice and Company Affairs, Arun Jaitley was born on December 28, 1952. He did his schooling from St. Xavier's School, New Delhi. He received his graduate degree in Commerce from Sri Ram College of Commerce, New Delhi and also qualified for the Law examination from the University of Delhi. He has been practicing law before the Supreme Court and several High Courts in the country since 1977. In 1990, he was appointed as the Additional Solicitor General of India.

Arun Jaitley was President of Students, Union of Delhi University (1974). During the period of the proclamation of Internal Emergency, he was under preventive detention for more than a year. He has recently presented a paper on Laws related to Corruption and Crime in India before the Indo-British Legal forum. He also represented the Indian Government in the United Nations General Assembly in 1998. He is a member of the Bhartiya Janata Party as well as the National Executive of the Party.
