(October 5, 1823 - January 30, 1874)
Ramalinga Swamigal, popularly known as Vallalar, was one of the notable saints and mystics of the 19th century. He was born on October 5, 1823. When he was only six months old his father passed away. Therefore, he was brought up under the generous guardianship of his elder brother, who had good knowledge of religious matters.
From his early days, Swamigal was attracted towards Shiva Bhakti. It is very interesting to know that even without getting a formal education, Swamigal, was aware of numerous scriptures and literature. It is said that he imbibed knowledge through divine grace, staying all alone in a room provided with a lamp and mirror. At the age of 27, he was married to Danammal. But marital life did not distract him from his religious duty. Then he moved to Vadalur, where he set Gnana Sabia and Dharma Salai. He was a relentless critic of practices based on birth, class, status or privilege. He had no regard for the Puranas', 'Vedas', and the Agamas'. He left this world on January 30, 1874.
