Biography of Ashok Kumar

(October 13, 1911 - December 10, 2001)

In 1911, the great Hindi film star and producer Ashok Kumar Ganguly was born at Bhagalpur in Bihar. He was popular to the audience as Dada Muni'. His original name was Kumudlal Kungilal Ganguly. He was cast in the lead role opposite Devika Rani in "Jeevan Naiya' and Achhut Kanya'.

The remarkable hit films of Ashok Kumar are 'Bandhan', 'Kangan and Jhoola'. After the death of Himanshu Rai in 1940, Ashok Kumar enjoyed the protection of Mukherjee who managed the studio with Devika Rani. In films like Mehboob's 'Humayun', ‘Afsana' and 'Kismat’, Ashok Kumar performed very well.

Along with S.Mukherjee, Gyan Mukherjee, and Rai Bahadur Chunilal, Kumar set up the Filmistan in 1943. The three Kumar brothers Ashok, Kishore, and Anup made comedy films like 'Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi’.

Even in T.V. serials, Ashok Kumar was much liked by the audience. This great actor died in 2001.
