Biography of Balkrishna Buwa Ichalkaranjikar

Balkrishna Buwa inherited music from his father Ramchandra Buwa who was a good singer of the time. Balkrishna was born at Chandur in Kolhapur. When he was merely eight years old, he lost his mother. After that, he left his home and started wandering here and there to seek knowledge of music.

Balkrishna Buwa learnt the first lesson in music from famous singer Vishnu Buwa Bhogalekar. He came back to his house after two years and within a year he had to witness his father's death. Being so much desirous learning singing he again left his house and came to Kolhapur where he met famous singer Bhau Buwa Kadgawadkar. But his association with Kadgawadkar did not last long. Later he learnt singing from Chintamani Mishra and Vasudev Buwa Joshi of Gwalior. After becoming well versed in singing he visited many places including Nepal. During his stay in Mumbai, he founded Gayan Samaj and also started 'Sangeet Darpan', a monthly magazine. Balkrishna Buwa died in 1926.
