Biography of Bhartendu Harishchandra
(September 9, 1850 - January 6, 1885)
Bhartendu Harishchandra was born on September 9, 1850 in a very affluent family. Being born in an educated family he got involved in studies at a very early stage.
Bhartendu always took keen interest in literature. He was a very loveable person. He never gave importance to money in comparison to human needs. He was helpful to others. He used to help the needy as much as he could. Therefore, he was very popular in his area.
His contribution to the Hindi literature is invaluable. He started a monthly magazine 'Harishchand Magazine', in which he introduced the writings of Hindi in a new way. He innovated the ‘Khari boli' in Hindi to present the material of his magazine.
He always instructed people not to imitate western culture. His famous dramas are "Chandravali', 'Bharat Durdesa', 'Andher Nagari'. He died on January 6, 1885 uttering the word "Radha-Krishan'. His works in Hindi will always be remembered for its purity and originality.
