Biography of C.T. Chintamani

(April 10, 1880 - July 1, 1941)

A well-known journalist and the editor of pre-independence era, C.Y. Chintamani was born in 1880 at Vijayanagram. He passed matriculation and E. A. examination in 1895 and 1897, respectively. But due to economic problems he could not study further. Yet his interest in reading and writing did not diminish.


From his childhood he was fearless and frank and always maintained honesty in his work. But these qualities generated a lot of problems in his life. He moved to Madras to work with Shri Subrahmanyam Ayyar. He bought the Indian Herald journal costing Rs. 300 and became its manager, correspondent and editor. After two years Chintamani came to Uttar Pradesh and remained there till the end of his life.


He was also the founder-member of the Liberal Party and represented it at the Round Table Conference. He was the General Secretary of the National Liberal Federation of India for nine years and held the post of President twice, in 1920 and 1931. He died in 1941.
