Biography of  G. Sankara Kurup

(June 3, 1901 - February 2, 1978)


G. Sankara Kurup was a great poet of Kerala. He won the Jnanpith award in 1965.


He was born on June 3, 1901. He graduated in the conventional system. After passing the Malayalam higher examination he worked as a Malayalam teacher.


In his writings, Sankara Kurup followed the tradition of M.V. Narayana Menon. But he had a distinct voice. His poetry is based on the enduring values. His works had a strange mooring in the social realities around him. Life in its complexity appealed to him.


He portrayed the poor section of the society with full sympathy. His famous works are 'Surkakanti', Anweshanam' and 'Nakshatra-Geetam'. G. Sankara Kurup also mastered Bengali and translated Gitanjali' and over 100 other poems of Tagore in Malayalam. He was nominated to the Rajya Sabha in 1968. He died on February 2, 1978.
