Biography of "Geeta Dutt"

A voice full of vivacity, vitality, and spontaneity made Geeta Dutt an evergreen singer of her times. Her unique ethereal voice quality breathed life into any song she sang. Geeta Dutt was born in the Faridpur district in East Bengal in 1930.

Her parents shifted to Mumbai when she was just twelve years old. Her first singing assignment was for the film 'Bhakt Prahlad (1946). Her major assignment came with the film Do Bhai' (1947). The song 'Mera Sundar Sapna Beet Gaya' from the same film, established Geeta as a singer of class.

The early fifties were the best years in Geeta's life. In 1953, she married Guru Dutt. Her lifting songs too were major hits making her the queen of the light brigade'. Unfortunately, in the latter half of the fifties, professional as well as personal frustrations, steered Geeta towards alcoholism. Geeta gradually lost interest in professional singing despite some beautiful songs in ‘Anubhav'. Geeta Dutt died in 1972.
