Biography of Guru Dutt
(July 9, 1925 - October 10, 1964)
Guru Dutt was a great filmmaker who made classics like 'Pyaasa’ and 'Kaagaz Ke Phool’. He was born on July 9, 1925, in Mysore. He had his early education in Kolkata before doing basic training with dance maestro Uday Shankar.
Then he joined Prabhat Studios. There he got a break as a choreographer in the film "Hum Ek Hain'. Guru Dutt and Geeta Roy met during the song recording of 'Baazi' and fell in love and married on May 26, 1953.
The film "Aar Paar' established Guru Dutt as a director to reckon with. Then followed some of his best works like "Mr. and Mrs. 55, Pyaasa and 'Kaagaz Ke Phool'. Pyaasa' was Guru Dutt's real masterpiece. Flis film 'Sahib, Bibi Aur Ghulam' was commercially successful. The film was critically acclaimed too and won the President's silver medal. However, Guru Dutt's personal life was in shambles. On October 10, 1964, he took an overdose of sleeping pills and committed suicide.
