Biography of Lakshminath Bezbaruah

(November 18, 1868 - 1938)

In the 19th century, the man who linked Assam with the rest of India was Lakshminath Bezbaruah. He did splendid work towards popularising the Assamese language. No part of Assam remained untouched in his literary works.

He was born on November 18, 1868. His initial education was in Bengali. But to complete higher studies he went to Kolkata where he came in contact with many literary personalities. In 1892, he married Prangyasundari, the niece of Rabindranath Tagore.

In 1888, with the help of some friends, he translated Shakespeare's work Comedy of Errors' in the name of 'Bhramrang' and started a 'Sabha' to improve the Assamese Language.

He was an excellent author. He wrote biographies of Shri Shanker Dev', 'Mahapurush Shankar Dev' and 'Madhav'. He wrote a historical novel Padum Kunvari'. He also wrote poems and stories for children. However, he was mainly praised for his plays. He died in 1938.
