Biography of Mallika Sarabhai

Born: 9 May 1954, Ahmedabad

A noted filmmaker, a familiar T. V. anchor, an editor, a publisher, and a leading exponent of Bharatnatyam and Kuchipudi, Mallika Sarabhai dazzles with her multifaceted personality and everlasting charisma.

The daughter of a reputed dancer, Mrinalini Sarabhai, and famous scientist, Vikram Sarabhai, dancing came naturally to Mallika. With stalwarts like C.R. Acharyelu, the greatest living guru of Kuchipudi, and the other guru of the Darpana Academy of Performing Arts, she could not but learn to dance.

The first award she received was in 1977. A few years ago she received the award for best Solo Artist after being chosen from among 400 dancers from 25 countries, in Paris. She received the French Palme D', the highest civilian award conferred by the French government. Along with her mother Mrinalini Sarabhai, she co-directs the Darpana Academy of Performing Arts, Ahmedabad. Presently she is involved in choreography writing and social services.
