Biography of Romesh Chunder Dutt

(August 13, 1848 - November 30, 1909)

Romesh Chunder Dutt was an able administrator, nationalist and economist. He was the only Indian of the 19th century who reached the post of Commissioner during the British government. He was born on August 13, 1848, in Kolkata in an educated family. He was very brilliant in his studies. He always got scholarship during his student life.

As an administrator in various Parganas he took up many constructive works and became very popular for his works. After retiring from service, he became actively involved in the nationalist movement. In 1899, he was made the President of the Indian National Congress.

As a scholar, Dutt conducted pioneering research in the field of economy, particularly on issues such as poverty, famines, indigenous industries and the impact of high taxes. His famous works include "The Economic History of British India', 'India in the Victorian Age' and History of Civilization in Ancient India'. On November 30, 1909, Dutt died of heart failure.
