Biography of V.S. Khandekar
(Born: 11 January 1898, Sangli - Died: 2 September 1976, Miraj)
A famous Marathi literary figure, V.S. Khandekar was born in 1889. V.S. Khandekar, popularly known as Bhausaheb, dominated Marathi literature for almost three decades, from 1930 to 1960.
The versatile writer V.S. Khandekar wrote 15 novels, 31 short stories, 15 stories, 20 literary essays and plays. Besides this, he also edited a number of books.
Indian mythological literature owes a lot to him. His work 'Yayati' fetched him the Sahitya Academy Award in 1960 as well as the Jnanpith Award in 1975. Apart from 'Yayati', 'Don Dhruv', Ulka' and ‘Krounchwadh’are his significant works.
He also contributed to the film industry by writing stories for numerous Hindi and Marathi movies. Drawn towards mythology and disturbed by the climate of nihilism and the loss of moral values in the contemporary society, Khandekar sought to expand the scope of the social novel.
