The Sweeper

We rely on several members of the community to make life better or safer for us. When we think of such people we usually think of doctors, nurses, and firefighters. We forget about the people who collect the rubbish. Yet sweepers are essential to the community. They come round regularly in their lorries to empty the bins or plastic bags which contain household rubbish. We all have a great deal of household rubbish these days. There is so much packaging round goods. If this rubbish was not collected regularly, dogs and cats might tear open the plastic bags or knock over the bins. This would make the streets very messy. Also, it might spread disease. Bin men also empty public litter bins. It is important that there are enough of these in public places. They encourage people not to drop their litter on the street. Again, it is important that these bins are emptied regularly. If this does not happen the bins overflow and there is litter all over the ground. This is particularly true of litter bins near fast food places. If bins overflow, all the packaging gets scattered about the place. Bin men keep our streets tidy. We really ought to appreciate them more.
