My Hobby

The word hobby is taken from the phrase 'hobby-horse'. A hobby horse is a wooden horse made for children, as a toy for rocking. Therefore, hobby means a pursuit undertaken for pleasure. It is a favorite pastime. Its aim is not to earn money, though it may sometimes bring money indirectly. Hobbies are very useful. They keep us busy. They save us from falling into bad company. They give us entertainment.

They break the monotony of our daily life. They give us knowledge also. Different persons have different hobbies. Some of the most common hobbies are stamp-collecting, photography, painting, coin-collecting, fishing, reading, writing, knitting, stitching, etc. Hobbies reflect the life and personality of a person. Reading books my hobby. I read only good and useful books. I am especially fond of reading the biographies and autobiographies of great men. I get instruction as well as entertainment from the reading of books. I can enjoy the company of great writers by reading their works. I get inspired by reading about the lives of great leaders. Thus the reading of books helps me to learn the good and noble things of life. Good books are the best friends. They contain the wisdom of ages. They give us an endless store of knowledge. We can learn much from them. They provide us food for the mind. A well-read person is held in high respect. He can impress others with his knowledge and understanding. He has better chances to rise in life. Reading books is best of all the hobbies. It is not very expensive. We can borrow books from our friends. We can also get them from libraries. We can enjoy reading books at any period of our life. These are books to suit every age and every taste. They prove good companions during long journeys also. I love my hobby of reading books. My fondness for it goes on increasing day by day.
