A Football Match

"A sound mind lives in a sound body." A football match is entertaining and educative. It provides fun to the spectators. It removes the dullness of life. It inspires young boys and girls to play games. It teaches us discipline and sportsmanship.

Last Sunday, a very interesting football match was played between our school and B.D. Public School. Lots of people had come to see the match. Both the teams were evenly matched. So the game was well contested. Mr. R.K. Nanda was the referee. He was fair and impartial.

The match began at 4 P.M. At first the game was rather slow. But soon it became brisk. The B.D. school team pressed us hard. Most of the time the game was near our goal once the captain of the B.D. school team kicked the ball right into our goal. But the goalkeeper, who was very smart and active, saved the goal. He won great applause.

Soon it was half time. Both the teams had cold drinks and light refreshments.

After ten minutes, the referee whistled and the game started again.

In the second half, both the teams put up a very good show. There were some fine kicks and counter-kicks. It seemed as if the match would end in a draw.

There were only ten minutes left. I got the ball and passed it on to the right forward, Jatinder. He dribbled the ball very softly, cleared the defense of the opponents, and kicked a goal. There were loud cheers. Our boys went almost mad with joy.

This discouraged the B.D. Public School team. They tried hard to equalize. But their efforts proved fruitless. The time was fast running out. Soon after, the referee blew the long whistle and the game was over.

We won the match by one goal to love. Our students cheered the winning team. Our boys rushed on to the ground and yelled with delight. But the losing team displayed sportsmanship. They did not react in a vulgar manner. It accepted its defeat and congratulated us. It was a proud day for our school.
