My Dear Shiv,

It is always a pleasure to hear from friends like you. I am glad to know that you are going to have in your college this Monday a debate on "Which is to be more admired, a poet or a warrior?" You have asked me to furnish you with some points on the subject.

As for me, I would prefer a poet to a warrior. The poet creates while a warrior kills and destroys. A warrior may kill a man but he cannot convert his heart but the poet rules the heart. He can create a revolution in the minds of men. A poet can change the destiny of a nation. Millions of men are still inspired by the Gita, the Ramayana, and the Mahabharata. A warrior depends on a poet for his fame. A poet is the maker of a nation. The two famous national songs of India, "Jana-Gana-Mana" and "Bande-Matram" send a thrill along our spine when we sing them. This clearly shows that the pen which the two great poets, Tagore and BankimChander Chatterjee, yielded was far mightier than the sharpest sword of the greatest warrior.

A poet possesses a fine sensibility, noble sentiments, and a glowing imagination. A poet is the greatest artist. He is a great lover of beauty. He can inspire a nation with the fine sentiments of patriotism, selflessness, service, sacrifice, and love. The achievements of warriors however glorious and glamorous are short-lived but the conquests of poets are the conquests of the hearts, so they are everlasting. The influence of Kalidas or Valmiki or Shakespeare is eternal. Their writings will continue to mold the mind and character of man till the end of time. The great world conquerors like Alexander, Napoleon, and Hitler are no more. They are dead and gone but Homer, Kalidas, and Shakespeare shall live forever in their immortal verse.

The warriors make their way to glory through pools of blood and tears but what the poet produces, he does through joy, because joy lies at the root of all creation. All the ills and miseries of humanity are the creation of the warrior but it owes all its happiness and dreams to the poet. A warrior is destructive while a poet places a soothing balm on the bleeding and lacerated hearts of the suffering children of God. The ideas of poets are the most explosive things. They rule the mind and the mind rules the world. Where warriors have failed poets have conquered. A warrior is the symbol of brute force but a poet is the symbol of soul force.

With love,

Yours sincerely,

Akshay Sharma.
