Sub: Suggestions on how to improve the standards of sports in India.

Dear Sir,

India has once again returned from the recently held Olympics in Atlanta empty-handed, barring the solitary bronze of Leander Peas.

It is unfortunate that a country of 900 million people cannot produce a sportsperson of international standing. In this regard, I have few suggestions to make.

We have to, first of all, choose the players very young; this would entitle a talent scouting on a war-footing.

We should then ensure that these children are provided with excellent schooling, dietary, and training facilities.

Exposures of international quality should be given to them as a matter of routine. They should be isolated from external influences so that they can concentrate on building up their game.

A separate body comprising of internationally renowned sportspersons and coaches should be formed in order to oversee their progress. Care should be taken to avoid political interference. The sport's administrators should be appointed at the discretion of the President of India in consultation with prominent sports personalities and journalists.

Arrangements should be made for sports psychologists and medical officers specializing in sports medicines at the training centers.

Financial independence should be maintained by opening up various events for sponsorships. Transparency in financial dealings should be maintained by supervision through an independent financial agency.

Sir, I am of the firm belief that steps such as these would go a long way in improving the standards of sports in India.

Yours sincerely,

ABC.
