Dear Sir,

I would like to draw attention to the severity of the sewerage disposal problem in the Meerut city in general and Begum Bagh in particular,

The sewer system is old and is therefore unable to cope up with the increasing load of the sugar mills' and the municipal waste.

Designed to handle only a limited population and a few sugar mills this system is now groaning under a combined onslaught of over 10 lakh people and scores of sugar mills and crushers.

This has resulted in the overflowing of sewer pipes due to regular blockage by the household and industrial waste. These sewer lines are further affected by the open sewer system of the bygone years which is still functioning in the city.

The Begum Bagh area has had the misfortune of being caught between the old and the new. Quite a few sewer lines are new while the rest are of old mode, consequently, neither of them are able to take the increasing load of the waste discharged by the households. The overflowing sewers are causing great inconvenience to the residents. They have also become health hazards and breeding grounds for diseases. The air has become polluted by the vile gases emanating from the sewers.

Repeated representations by the residents of the area to the city commissioner and the higher authorities have not brought about remedial action.

The situation has come to such a pass that we fear an outbreak of malaria and other fatal diseases. I, therefore, request you to kindly publish this letter so that our plea may be acted upon by the authorities.

Yours sincerely,

Shashank Sharma.
