Biography of Amrita Pritam

Amrita Pritam, a renowned novelist, was born in 1919 in Punjab, the land of five rivers. From the beginning, she remained in touch with literature. Unfortunately, she lost her beloved mother at the tender age of eleven. She grew up under the care of her father, who himself was a teacher and writer. Due to the influence of her father, at the age of 16, she composed her first poem.
Her literary works are in Hindi and Punjabi. In 1973, Delhi University conferred her with an Honourary Degree of D.Lit. Her renowned novels are 'Dr. Dev', 'Ek Thi Tara', 'Rang Ka Patta' etc. More than 30 books have been written by her and these have been translated in as many as 30 languages.
Rasidi Ticket is Pritam's autobiography. For "Kagaz Te Kanvas (Punjabi), she got India's highest literary Award-Jnanpith award in 1982. In her philosophy, marriage is a futile and outdated institution. She became a member of the Rajya Sabha in 1986.
