Biography of Amartya Sen
(November 3, 1933)
Amartya Sen is one of the leading economists and famous authors of India. He came into the limelight when he became the sixth Indian to receive the Nobel Prize in 1998. With this, he also became the first Indian to be awarded the Nobel Prize in Economics.
He was born on November 3, 1933, at Shantiniketan in West Bengal. He studied in Presidency College, Kolkata, and Trinity College, Cambridge. At the age of 23, he joined the Jadavpur University as a Professor. But the surroundings in which he spent his childhood were pathetic. He was deeply moved by the miserable condition of the people. He saw people dying due to lack of food and water
As many as 20 books have been written by Sen. He is also the co-author of the book, 'Indian Economic Development and Social Opportunity. In another book, 'Development as Freedom', he has explained various kinds of freedom. The majority of his books deal with welfare economics. He was awarded the Bharat Ratna in 1998.
