Biography of  Acharya Ram Chandra Shukla

(1884 – 1941)

Ram Chandra Shukla was born in 1884 in Basti, Uttar Pradesh. His father's name was Pandit Chandra Bali Shukla. He got his primary education at Hamirpur. Later he studied at Mission School. After completing his post-graduation he became the editor of Anand Kadambini'.

In 1900, he came into the limelight as his writings were regularly published in Saraswati Patrika. In 1903, his story "Gyarah Varsh Ka Samay” (A Period of Eleven Years) became very famous. This heralded a new era in the history of the Hindi short story. Ram Chandra Shukla also edited 'Nagri Pracharini Patrika'. He wrote critical essays on various topics.

Ram Chandra Shukla was the first to write a sequential history of Hindi literature and to divide it into different periods. His 'Hindi Sahitya Ka Itihas' is considered the most authentic document on this subject. Mr. Shukla also gave modern form to literary essays. He died on February 2, 1941 due to a heart failure.
