Aruna Sairam was born in a Tamil family with a deep love for music. Her first teacher in the art of Carnatic music was her mother, Smt. Rajalakshmi Sethuraman. Her father was a true connoisseur of music and her house often served as a favourite guest home for the greatest musicians and dancers of India like Smt. T. Balasarastwati, the Khayal singer Ustad Amir Khan and Smt. M.S. Subbalakshmi. It was in such an environment that she met Sangit Kalanidhi Smt. T. Brinda, who taught her Carnatic music for several years.

Aruna Sairam has a musical legacy rooted in the traditional classicism of her guru. The deep emotional impact of Aruna's music intensely moves her listeners and has made her the favourite of both music critics as well as the public.
