Biography of Geeta Bali

(1930 - January 21, 1965)

Geeta Bali was a wonderfully natural actress and a fabulous human being. Her dancing eyes and her animated, expressive face were her most outstanding features. Yet life was snatched away from this vibrant personality at a young age of 35. She did 70 odd films in a ten-year career.

Geeta Bali was born in a poor family. Impressed by her off-screen vivacity, Kidan Sharma cast her in Suhaag Raat in 1948. Soon, Geeta was inundated with offers. She won rave reviews even in supporting roles like in 'Badi Behan' and ‘Madhubala'.

She played the lighthearted heroine to comedian Bhagwan in the super successful Albela'. She fell in love with Shammi Kapoor and married him in 1955. She continued to work after her marriage in a few films like Sohrab Modi's 'Jailer', where she won rave reviews. Geeta contracted smallpox while shooting a film. She passed away on January 21, 1965, and was cremated at 'Banganga', close to the temple where she had married Shammi Kapoor.
