Biography of Githa Hariharan

Githa Hariharan was born in 1954. She grew up in Mumbai and Manila. Later she went to the United States to complete her higher studies. She worked with public television in the United States.
Githa Hariharan returned to India in 1979. She has penned many novels- "The Thousand Faces of the Night' (1982), "The Ghosts of Vasu Master' (1994), When Dream Travels' (1999), etc. Her first book "The Thousand Faces of the Night' brought the Commonwealth Writer's Prize for Best First Book. In this book, she has used myths to help examine contemporary women's lives - to suggest that they might help us to understand the lives, which on the surface seem rather placid and devoid of event.
She also wrote a book titled "The Art of Dying' (1993), which is a collection of short stories. She edited A Southern Harvest', a volume of stories in English translations from four major South Indian languages. Presently, she resides in New Delhi and works as a freelance editor.
