Biography of Govardhan Ram Tripathi

(October 20, 1855 - January 4, 1907)

Govardhan Ram Tripathi was born on October 20, 1855, in a prestigious Nagar family at Nadiad in Gujarat. From this childhood, he was very fond of listening to stories,

In 1868, he was admitted in Elphinston College School and later, did his graduation from the Elphinston College. In his student life he met Professor Bhandarkar and he was very influenced by him. He took a pledge to serve literature. He was convinced that to become a writer, one should be economically independent. Therefore, he passed the law examination and became a lawyer and started practising law in Mumbai.

He left the practice of law at the age of 40 and came back to his native village. In 1906, he was elected the President of Gujarati Literature Council. While he was in the law profession he wrote the epic 'Saraswatichandra', which was published in 1887. His other famous works are Navalram Ni Jivan Katha', 'Snehmudra Kavya', 'Lilawati Jivankala'. He died on January 4, 1907.
