Biography of Gulzar
(August 18, 1936)
Poet, lyricist, writer, and film director, Gulzar is one of those sensitive people whose works are laced with the lyrical but psychologically adept examination of human sensibilities. Gulzar was born on August 18, 1936, at Deena which is now in Pakistan. The tumultuous events of the partition saw him shift his base to Delhi. He began his career in the film industry as an assistant to Bimal Roy, Hrishikesh Mukherjee, and Hemant Kumar.
His first break as a lyricist came when he wrote Mora Gora Ang Lai Le for Bimal Roy's 'Bandini' (1963). His first film as a director was Mere Apne' (1971). Since then he has worked in almost 60 films.
In 1996, the hit film 'Maachis brought him right back in our minds and he has followed his success up with his latest venture 'Hu Tu Tu'. Gulzar made a comeback to the film industry with Rakesh Mehta's Aks', in which he penned superior lyrics to create the dark and sinister mood of the film. Some of his fine films are Anand', 'Guddi', 'Bawarchi' and 'Namak Haram’.
