Biography of J.C. Bose

(1858 - 1937)

An eminent inventor and pioneer of modern science in India, Jagdish Chandra Bose was born in 1858 in East Bengal (now in Bangladesh). His father's name was Bhagwan Chandra Bose. J.C. Bose completed schooling in Kolkata. He went to England to pursue higher studies.

After finishing his studies in London he returned to India and joined the faculty of Presidency College. He initially researched on the properties of electric waves and demonstrated the production and detection of 5-25 mm electromagnetic waves. But he left the research due to the indifferent attitude of some English scientists.

He developed sensitive instruments like a 'Crescograph', for measuring plant growth and behaviour, and a resonant and oscillating recorder to measure the electric response of plants to external stimuli. His well-known published works are Responses in the Living and Non-living and Plant Responses'. He also founded the Bose Research Institute in Kolkata. In 1917, he was knighted by the British government. Bose died in 1937.
