Biography of Jawaharlal Nehru
(November 14, 1889 - May 27, 1964)
A name without which the study of Indian history is impossible is - Jawaharlal Nehru, India's first Prime Minister.
He was born on November 14, 1889 in Allahabad (U.P.). His father's name was Motilal Nehru and his mother's name was Swaroop Rani. His initial education was taken care of by private tutors at home. He went to England for higher education and joined the famous Cambridge University. In 1912, he returned to India as a barrister and joined India's freedom movement. He spent 17 years in jail during the freedom movement. After Independence on August 15, 1947, he became India's first Prime Minister.
He loved children and called them the future of the nation. His birthday is celebrated as Children's Day. He wrote many famous books like 'Discovery of India', Autobiography', Glimpses of World History. He was honoured with the Bharat Ratna in 1955. On May 27, 1964, the invaluable gem of India and the creator of modern India passed away.
