Biography of Kalidasa

(4th Century)

Kalidasa is the greatest known Sanskrit dramatist and poet that India has ever produced. He flourished during the Golden age of Indian history. In fact, he served the king Chandragupta Vikramaditya, the Gupta ruler. He was one of the Navaratnas (9 gems) at the court of Chandragupta.

Kalidasa's works include plays, epics and lyrics. His work reflects the aristocratic society, sure of its dignity and power. He was the pioneer in exploiting Sanskrit to the full. His best-illustrated work is Abhigyana Shakuntalam (Recognition of Sakuntala). His another most venerated literary work is "Meghadutam (Cloud Messenger). Its simplicity of diction, description of nature, and delicate expression of love and agony are now a touchstone for examining any other writings.

Some of his best works are ‘Malavikagnimitra', 'Vikramoravsiyam and Abhigyana Shakuntalam' (plays), 'Raghu Vansa' and 'Kumara Sambhavam (epics), "Meghdoot and Ritu Samhara' (lyrics).
