Biography of Khushwant Singh

(2 February 1915 - 20 March 2014)

Khushwant Singh, a well-known writer and journalist, was born on February 2, 1915 in Hadali, Punjab. He studied at Lahore King's College and got the Barrister's degree from London.

His popularity began when he became the Editor of Illustrated Weekly of India. He provided a new outlook to the magazine by publishing articles from every sphere of life. He then became the Chief Editor of the Hindustan Times, New Delhi. Thereafter, he remained a member of the Rajya Sabha from 1980-86. He vehemently protested against the operation Blue Star and criticised the government's action of sending the military into the Golden Temple in 1984. In the same year, he returned his Padma Bhushan award to the Indian government.

As many as 28 books have been written by him including A History of the Sikhs', 'Train to Pakistan', 'The Company of Women', etc. He wrote the autobiography, "Truth, Love, and a little Malice'. Once he was also awarded 'The honest man of the year.
