Muthuswami Iyer is a household name in South India. There are very few great men in South India who can match the greatness of Muthuswami Iyer.

He was born in a very poor family in January 1852 in Chennai. He had no money to continue his studies. Therefore, he started working with a village Munim at a monthly salary of Re. 1. He worked there till the age of 12. Later on he became a clerk in a Taluk office. The Talukdar was very impressed with his work. So he told him to go to Madras to continue his unfinished studies.

After completing his studies he became a school inspector. But his style of working and dedication impressed everybody. He was promoted as the Deputy Collector with magisterial powers. The British government appointed him as the sub-judge and then as the Chief Justice of a high court. He was a great believer in simple living and high thinking. He was a humanist also. He died on January 25, 1895.
