Biography of R.K. Narayan

(October 10, 1906 - May 13, 2001)

R.K. Narayan is a very popular name in English literature not only in India but the world over. He was born on October 10, 1906 in Kerala. After completing his studies he joined a high school and became a teacher. However, he desired to become a writer.

He had a great fascination for children and their activities. So, a majority of books written by him are associated with children. Some of his well-acclaimed books are 'Swami and friends', 'Malgudi Days', 'The English Teacher', 'The Ramayan', 'The financial Expert', etc.

In the book "Malgudi Days', a T.V. serial was made which became very popular among children. His book "The Guide was so much appreciated the world over that a play was organised at both Cambridge and Oxford University He visited the Philippines to write the biography of Raman Magsaysay. The Indian government honoured him with the Sahitya Academy Award and the Padma Bhushan. He was also once nominated as a member of the Rajya Sabha in the Parliament. He passed away on May 13, 2001.
