Rekha's real name is Bhanurekha. The daughter of the Tamil Film legend Shivaji Ganeshan, Rekha made her debut in Rangula Ratnam'as baby Bhanurekha. She acted as the leading star in 'Sawan Bhadon'. Later, her transformation from a gawky teenager into a femme-fatale was as spectacular as it was amazing. Rekha's development as an actress culminated in 'Umrao Jaan' for which she won the National Award for Best Actress. As a tragic courtesan, she gave a performance of rare sensibility. The expression of her natural talent became more pronounced in films like 'Kalyug’ and 'Utsav'.
In 1990s, her success started with the film 'Phool Bane Angare', and was followed by the super hit ‘Khiladiyon Ka Khiladi'. Her role in Mira Nair's 'Kamasutra' has been more satisfying for her. These days, Rekha has been busy doing character roles.
