Biography of Ruby Myers

(1907 - 1983)

Sulochana was born in 1907 as Ruby Myers in a family of Anglo-Indians. When Mohan Bhavani of the Kohinoor Film Company approached her with an offer of casting her in his film, she refused but later on accepted the offer. Though she had no knowledge of acting, her beauty and luminosity shined through her film and appealed to the audience.

She had a highly successful beginning with hits like - Wild Cat of Bombay', 'Telephone Girl', 'Typist Girl', and fantasy movies like ‘Heer Ranjha' and stunt films like Punjab Mail. During the years 1928-29, R.S. Chaudhari's romantic superhit films like ‘Madhuri', ‘Anarkali', Indira A”, made her silent era's first superstar. She was then the highest-paid star in the Indian Film Industry, drawing Rs. 5000 per month.

But in the 1940's her fortunes started waning. She left Imperial Cinema, which proved fatal for her. She resorted to doing supporting roles and gradually was almost reduced to penury. This once Grand Dame of Indian Cinema died in 1983.
