Biography of Sarojini Naidu

(Born: 13 February 1879, Hyderabad - Died: 2 March 1949, Lucknow)

Sarojini Naidu was a gifted poetess and an impressive orator. She was born in 1879 in a Bengali family. She was a girl of exceptional intellect.

Sarojini started composing poems in English at the age of 13. After passing matriculation from Madras, Sarojini went to England. Here, her poem books "The Broken Wing' and 'The Feather of Dawn' were published. In fact, it was a great achievement for an Indian because her writings were placed alongside Shakespeare, Milton and Keats.

Under the influence of Gokhale, Gandhi and Nehru, she joined the Indian freedom struggle. In 1925, she became the President of the Indian National Congress. After the Independence of India, she became the first Governor of Uttar Pradesh.

In her poems, one can see the various aspects of human nature like love, honesty, satisfaction and beauty. Her literary works are 'Songs of India', 'Bird of Time', 'The Broken Wings' and 'The Golden Threshold She was known as the 'Nightingale of India'. She died in 1949.
