Biography of Subhadra Kumari Chauhan

(Born: 16 August 1904, Prayagraj - Died: 15 February 1948, Seoni)

Subhadra Kumari Chauhan was a great Hindi poetess who combined in her personality the patriotism of Joan of Arc and the lyricism of Meera. She was born in 1904 at Nihalpur in Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh.

Subhadra Kumari was married to Thakur Laxman Singh of Khandwa in 1919 and became a devoted wife and mother. But she could not keep herself within the boundaries of home. In 1921, she left her studies and joined the ongoing Non-Cooperation Movement. She was the first woman Satyagrahni to court arrest in Nagpur. She wrote highly inspiring patriotic poems like ‘Senani Ka Swagat’, ‘Veeranka Kaise ho Vasant’.

Subhadra Kumari Chauhan also wrote some famous poetic works. Her poem "Jhansi ki Rani' was one of the most recited and sung poems in Hindi literature. It is full of nationalistic fervour. She died in a car accident on February 15, 1949. Her major works are 'Mukul, "Tridhara' (Collection of Poem) Bikhare Moti' and 'Sidhe Sade Chitra' (Collection of Stories).
