Biography of Toru Dutt
(Born: 4 March 1856, Kolkata - Died: 30 August 1877, Kolkata)
Toru Dutt is one of the talented writers who became famous at the age of 21. Her writings are in English and French. She was born in a rich Kaystha family in 1856. Her family members had a great interest in writing and reading poems. Toru Dutt's mother Khestramani Mitra used to tell the old stories to her child in her mother tongue. This cultivated a love for Bengali language in Toru Dutt.
Her childhood education was completed at home. Toru was a brilliant student. She toured various countries during her prime age. She learnt French when she was in France with her family. After that, she came to Cambridge. Here Toru met various famous writers. In 1873, Toru Dutt returned to Kolkata.
Toru Dutt had affection towards nature. In her poems she wrote splendidly about animals and gardens. In 1894, she lost her sister Aru. She became very sad which is perceptible in her poems. She wrote her last letter on July 30, 1877, to her closest friend Martin and after one month she died.
