My Experience of A Hot Summer Day

The 15th of June last year was the hottest day of the year. The sun beat down furiously. The earth burnt like a furnace. It was difficult to go out. Most of the people stayed within doors. Herds of cattle felt restless. Birds fluttered about helplessly. The heat was unbearable. Men took refuge under fans and coolers. The cold drink was in great demand. I took bath several times that day but to no purpose. People took shelter under the shady trees. They had parched lips and' dry tongues. Farmers stopped ploughing their fields during these hot hours. The doors and windows of the houses were almost closed. The entire earth was burning with the hot rays of the sun. It was a great discomfort for human beings. Birds with open beaks took shelter in their nests. Dogs were sitting in gutters and drains to avoid heat.

It was heard that a number of people died of sun-stroke. This caused a great panic in the city. The people began to pray for rain. The earthen pitchers were emptied, yet the thirst was unquenched. Wells and ponds ran dry.

In the evening, there appeared black clouds. Soon after, one could hear the distant whistling of a strong wind. The wind was rising. The trees appeared to be waking up. The clouds were spread over the sky. The thunder-storm was coming. Then the rain came down. Everyone looked happy and refreshed. It gave relief to all. After the rain stopped, people came out of their houses. A few people went to gardens and public parks and took ice-cream and cold drinks.

Modern science has made summer very comfortable. For poor people at hot summer is more of a punishment. It is unbearable and makes them uncomfortable. But for rich men, summer is not as hot and winter not as cold. They enjoy both seasons.
