Biography of Jaya Bachchan

(April 9, 1948)

Jaya Bhaduri or Jaya Bachchan was born in 1948. She was the daughter of a journalist, and began her career in films in 1963, in Satyajit Ray's 'Mahanagar'. Her first Hindi film was Hrishikesh Mukherjee's "Guddi' and the entire country identified with her persona as the giggly, bubbly school girl. Her identification with Guddi was so complete that most of her later films were a sort of variations of it - Jawani Diwani', Anamika'.

Later, Jaya tried to break free of this image with films like 'Kora Kagaz' and 'Koshish' in which her subtle and sensitive acting were both critically acclaimed and publicly appreciated. Jaya signed four films with Amitabh Bachchan. Her acting in 'Zangeer' and Abhiman' was treated to watch.

The recent films - Fiza' and 'Kabhie Khushi Kabhie Gham' have Jaya portraying the role of current superstars Hritik Roshan and Shahrukh Khan's mother, which also fetched her the best supporting actress award.
