Biography of Mani Ratnam

Mani Ratnam is one of the best film directors of India. He is the biggest director in South India and a much respected one all over India as well. He has revolutionised the Tamil film industry with technically strong films that are beautifully photographed with well picturised songs.

Ratnam was born in Chennai in 1956. He studied Business Administration and Commerce. He worked initially as a management consultant before getting into films. Ratnam's debut film 'Kannad Pallavi Anu Pallavi' hardly caused any ripples. He come into the limelight with Mauna Ragam' in 1986. His next film 'Nayakan' was perhaps his greatest one.

A take-off from 'The Godfather and based on the life of the Mumbai-based gangster Varadarajan, the film won the National Award for actor Kamal Hassan. Ratnam's Roja' was a major hit all over India. The film introduced young music director A. R. Rehman. His first Hindi film 'Dil Se’ did not do well.
