Biography of Pupul Jayakar

(September 11, 1915 - March 28, 1997)

Pupul Jayakar is known worldwide for her achievement in representing Indian culture and reviving Indian village crafts. She was a very towering figure and a renowned women scholar.

Pupul Jayakar had been a close associate of Mrs. Indira Gandhi and J. Krishnamurti. According to her, the most acclaimed women heads of state in modern history was Indira. Indira, growing from the shy daughter of Jawaharlal Nehru to become an accomplished Indian politician, was an inspiration for Jayakar.

She was born on September 11, 1915 in Etawa in Uttar Pradesh. She also wrote the remarkable book J. Krishnamurti: A Biography and Fire in the Mind'. She was instrumental in getting the government of India to produce the award-winning documentary film about Krishnamurti called “The Seer Who Walks Alone'. Her works include Festival of India', 'In the United States', and 'Homage to Kalamkari', ‘Textiles and Ornaments of India’. She died on March 28, 1997.
