His father Sunil Dutt launched him in the film 'Rocky', produced under his own banner. The film was an average success. His next film ‘Naam’ proved to be a comeback vehicle for Sanjay. Meanwhile, Sanjay married Richa Sharma and became the father of a daughter. But differences cropped up and they got divorced. After the Mumbai bomb blasts, Sanjay was jailed for possessing AK-56. He was sentenced for three years of imprisonment.

After his release from jail, his film career took a new turn. Hit films like ‘Sajaan' and ‘Sadak’ presented Sanjay as a lame poet and the taxi driver fighting an underworld don. With the release of ‘Khalnayak’, he reached the pinnacle of his popularity.
