Biography of Swami Ramtirth

(October 22, 1873 - October 17, 1906)

Swami Ramtirth was a great saint, patriot, poet and teacher. His philosophy and revolutionary thoughts were applauded not only in India but also in foreign countries. He was born on October 22, 1873 in Gujranwala, Pakistan. His father, Heeranand, was a very poor man.

He was very good in studies right from his childhood. He completed his high school education from Gujranwala. After passing from high school he took admission in Mission College of Lahore. After completing his graduation and post-graduation he started teaching.

In 1900, he began publishing the monthly journal ‘Alif' in which poems about the Vedantas and philosophy were published. After some time the journal was stopped and he became a wanderer. He called himself 'Ram Badhshah'. Later on he visited Japan and America where people became his disciples. He also discussed about the Indian Independence. He said: "Every work done for the country is similar to the work done for God." Swami Ramtirth died on the auspicious day of Dipawali on October 17, 1906.
